Winner of logo competition for new Abergele Medical Centre

A student from a local secondary school has designed a healing hands of medicine logo for the new Gwrych Medical Centre, which is replacing the outdated surgery in Abergele.

The new building is being redeveloped in partnership with specialist medical centre developer Primary Asset, part of the MedicX Group.

Alice Naylor, a year seven student at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan, won the competition and will have her design featured on the outside of the new health centre building and on all stationery.

"We’ve been very pleased with the response to this competition and the standard of entries has been extremely high" said Dr Honeybun who is overseeing the surgery’s redevelopment.

“We’re looking forward to using the winning logo around the building and also on our letterhead. It’s been an outstanding result for us. I’m delighted we’ve managed to find such an excellent logo that is striking in its simplicity and even more remarkable as it is designed by one of the youngest students.”

Second place in the logo competition was awarded to Christopher Dorgan, a student in Year Ten. Jack Macdonald, third place winner, will also see his logo used in the new building. Judges considered Jack’s entry to be ideal for an internal wall feature so it is intended to incorporate his design within the children’s play area.

The standard of all entries for the competition was very high. As well as awarding first, second and third prizes of £150, £100 and £50, staff at the surgery decided to award highly commended certificates to Huw MacDonald and Jack Stokes to recognise their efforts.

Malcom Medlicott, Deputy Mayor of Abergele comments:
“It’s very satisfying to see the surgery finally moving forward after so many years and to see such extensive healthcare facilities coming to Abergele. It has also been very rewarding to see local children playing their part in the development of the surgery as well.”

The new health centre will provide Abergele with the latest in modern healthcare facilities with construction to be completed later this year and open for patients in January 2010. It is a much longed-for development by the local community and staff who have had to deal with outdated and undersized accommodation for many years.

The new surgery will consist of 13 consulting rooms, a treatment room, a minor operation suite and dedicated practice space for other health staff such as district nurses. The surgery will bring many new services to the local community and increase the available level of care dramatically whilst reducing the need to travel further afield to receive treatment. Bus services will be re-routed to create a link between the surgery and Abergele town centre to help benefit patients currently using the present premises. There will also be ample parking provision.”
